OfficeMaster Word Compare is a free online tool that finds every difference between two Microsoft Word documents and outputs a tracked-changes file you can open in Word's Review pane — plus an optional audit-grade PDF report with both files' SHA-256 hashes and a per-dimension change summary. Which file formats can I compare?
.docx, .doc, .rtf, .odt, .dotx, .dotm, .html, .txt and a few related Word-family formats. Output is .docx by default; .pdf / .rtf / .html / .odt / .txt also available.
Does it really detect formatting changes?
Yes — turn on 'Full 12-dimension diff' and we count paragraph alignment / indent / spacing / line-spacing / style-name changes plus character font / size / colour / bold / italic / underline / strikethrough changes.
What's in the audit PDF?
Both files' SHA-256 hashes (verifiable with sha256sum / Get-FileHash), ISO-8601 timestamp, total change count, per-dimension breakdown (12 rows), and the colour-coding legend. Financial / legal teams use it as work-paper evidence.
Are my files kept anywhere?
Files are uploaded over TLS 1.3, processed in stateless containers, and auto-deleted within 24 hours. We never store, share, or train on your documents. The audit PDF you download is your durable artifact.
Does this work for password-protected documents?
Yes. If either file is encrypted, the page prompts for the open password — sent over TLS, never stored, never logged. We do not crack passwords; you must provide the legitimate one.
Will it accept documents that already have tracked changes?
Yes. We accept-all-revisions on both inputs first (so the new diff is clean), then compare. The original tracked changes remain in your input files; we do not modify them.
Why two files at a time, not three or more?
Three-way merge requires conflict resolution UX that doesn't fit a free tool. For multi-version reconciliation, use Word's Review pane after running pairwise compares with us.
How does this compare to Microsoft Word's own Compare?
Word native Compare needs a Word license, doesn't generate an audit PDF, and is limited to text + format. We're free, browser-based, generate the audit PDF, and detect 12 dimensions.
